FSSAI License Renewal
Renewal of an FSSAI food business license or registration before it expires.
Who needs this
Any Food Business Operator (FBO) that already holds a Basic, State, or Central FSSAI license or registration and is within the renewal window (typically 30 days before expiry, though FoSCoS accepts applications earlier). This covers manufacturers, restaurants, cloud kitchens, food transporters, wholesalers, and retailers.

How long does it take
7-30 working days from a complete application, depending on license type and state FSSAI office workload
An FSSAI license or registration confirms that a food business meets the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India's hygiene, labelling, and safety requirements. Licenses are issued for a fixed term (1 to 5 years, chosen at the time of registration) and must be renewed before that term ends -- the license does not renew automatically, and operating on an expired license can attract penalties or force a business to stop trading until a fresh application is approved.
Renewal is filed through the FoSCoS (Food Safety Compliance System) portal, the successor to the older FLRS system. Most renewals reuse the same license category (Basic, State, or Central) the business already holds, though FoSCoS also allows switching categories at renewal if the business's turnover or scale has changed.
Common reasons for rejection or delay
- Form B submitted with incomplete or mismatched business/product details
- Wrong license category selected for the declared turnover
- Fee paid does not match the selected category or tenure
- Missing water test report or NOC for manufacturing premises
- Application filed after the license has already lapsed beyond the grace period, which requires a fresh application instead of a renewal
Frequently asked questions
What happens if my FSSAI license expires before I renew it?
You can still apply for renewal within 30 days of expiry in most cases, but operating without a valid license during that gap is a compliance risk. Beyond the grace period, FoSCoS treats it as a new application rather than a renewal.
Can I switch from a Basic to a State license during renewal?
Yes. FoSCoS allows you to change license category at renewal if your turnover or business scale has crossed the threshold for your current category.
How early can I apply for renewal?
FoSCoS accepts renewal applications up to 90 days before expiry, though most businesses file around the 30-day mark.
Is FSSAI renewal done entirely online?
Yes, applications and payments are filed through the FoSCoS portal, though some state food safety offices may request an in-person visit or inspection for State and Central licenses.
Do I need a fresh inspection for renewal?
Not always. Basic registrations rarely require inspection. State and Central license renewals may trigger an inspection if there have been complaints, product changes, or if it has been several years since the last visit.
What is the penalty for late renewal?
A late fee of ₹100 per day applies from the date of expiry until the renewal application is submitted.
